Just got back from a work trip in Paris which was super! Lots of yummy food. Had a quick five minute drawing and although I didn't actually see a big black cat in Paris i think the idea this must have come from somewhere about the streets. Don't look at the lines too closely as they are a bit wobbly as it was a very much needed quick 5 minute scribble!

I have been a bit behind with my blogging of late. These last few months have all been a bit bonkers! I recently moved to Hong Kong to start my new job here as a textile designer for a homeware company. I will still be blogging my personal work and projects as often as I can. Silly as it sounds but I don't have a camera with me here yet, so I thought I would draw you what I see most days! I came across this new comic by Blexbolex, 'Abecederia', in Brighton this weekend. The imagery is amazing each page somersaults into the next perfectly. A very good find. Its pretty short so im spreading my read out, reading only a page a day to make the enjoyment last. Blexbolex's work is just pretty dam beautiful. He knows how to use shapes that's for sure.

I have finally got some bits and bobs up on Esty. Its been a very busy few months, packing, moving house, unpacking, new jobs etc... so it took a little longer to get running than I had hoped. I've been working in the cold on a 3d model of this painting I did which will be apart of the winter Tatty Devine window. Its going to be a tough make, but I hope worth it. Hello, I had a little sale of my work and things in the shop windows of No10, Hereford two weekends ago, it was really successful and a lovely sunny weekend. It was great to chat to people and see peoples interest in my work, eat lots of sandwiches and catch up with a few friendly faces. Sandwich of the weekend...Brie, roast veg and cranberry sauce. Mmmm. My work Is still up and for sale in the window for another week, so if our around the area pop down!

The Tea Mountain - Narrative tea set

I haven't had chance to get my tea set photographed as of yet so here is some photographs of it shown at the 'This Will Kill That' show in July this year. This project my aim was to create an illustrative tea set. Having read deeply into the history of tea the design became inspired by the origins and traditions of 18^th Century afternoon tea gatherings and the use of these meetings to educate and share creative tales.

With these afternoon tea gatherings often being referred to as imitations of the French salons, I began to research and read many tales created by the women in these groups – particularly Madame D'Aulnoy.

After studying their conversational style of writing where stories where used as a form of, I decided to create my own story, which would be told over different components of the tea set. My idea to involve visual text came later, imitating the action of writing ideas down on your napkin.

I began illustrating 'The Selfish Giant' by Oscar Wilde. Yet to be completed, the arm chair that illustrates the giant will be surrounded by framed images on the wall that will tell the reader the rest of the story. Creating a homely but involving setting, I hope to show this later this year.

I've been thinking about my images for my tea set there purpose, its purpose as a tea set, its relevance to my research, to tea, to the french salons, and to me. My images are have a hint of building blockness to them - conventional shapes used to create and recreate different outcomes. Shapes put together and taken apart to create and recreate new outcomes. Something that is reminiscence to the stories that would be told during the meetings of the women of the french Salons. They would tell tales all built up from similar foundations- the building blocks if you like. Kings and queens, princes and princess, fairy godmothers, animal morphing, love and deciet, towns and villages, picturesque scenes with happy endings, fairy tales - dreamlike escapes, idealistic views of socioty. The french salon's are known for thier many stories, in particular Madame D'Aulnoy and Charles Perrault, but what makes them all simular apart from the differently dressed words is the solid blocks upon which they build from. I want to focus on this in my images and thier purpose for being applied to a tea set. My tea set will not have two parts the same although the images will be made from simular shapes (building blocks/fairy tale foundations) each cup plate saucer and spoon will have different images on, that can be mixed and matched, placed and replaced to tell different table top stories.

Music project

Tonight i have been thinking a lot about my music project, what it is, and what i want to achieve from it? How to start it? What is to be the foundations? As a follow on i guess from escapism I've been thinking about curiosity, to things unknown. Im not talking about aliens or anything silly like that more, like what is over that mountain, down into that valley and through that door? Is it something better than what we know (escapism)? Sonnenzimmer is my starting point for my images and Nick butcher , my starting inspiration for my sounds. I'm thinking about found instrumentation, objects we know but can not relate to once built into a composition. They loose their identity, thus becoming unrecognisable sounds. Endless loops, little structure or direction, unexpected endings and beginnings, little to hold onto and understand. Loose, vague, hinting, curious sounds accompanied by images of similar stature. Endless stories, open ended images. Any way that's the plan for today but it's likely to change tomorrow, we'll see how it goes over Easter.

This 1970 film adaptation of the classic French fairy tale by Charles Perrault, directed by Jacques Demy and starring Catherine Deneuve and Jean Marais it is completely amazing. The costumes and set design take on the feelof David Bowie steping in with a wand and working his magic. Rather than fuly disguising herself, the princess cleverly wears the donkey skin resting on her back creating the duality between beauty and the beast. Subtle hints like this flow though the film. Supported by outragous but beautiful sets and costumes the film overall is a refreshing and successfull film adaptation to a classic fairy tale, something needed in between Disney films.

For my Tea Garden installation I want to create a 'pond rug' - (links with my second furniture project). Beautiful ponds in tea gardens, the bright colours of fish breaking through the murky waters, layers-fish sandwiched between water, water sandwiched between fish.
